I am Karen and I am a cofounder of the company, Mir. Mir is a company that sells natural supplements and creams that uses cannabinoid (CBD) oil harvested from industrial hemp plants grown in Kentucky. I was introduced to CBD tinctures by a friend about 3 years ago. I was amazed at the ability of the oil to reduce stress, anxiety, and increase focus for me. I also noticed my anger subsiding. I began researching this amazing supplement and at every turn became even more surprised at the versatility this supplement offers to various users.
About 13 years earlier I was diagnosed with stage II HR positive breast cancer. I underwent a lumpectomy and then journeyed through 18 months of chemo, 6 weeks of daily radiation, and then followed up with 5 years of Arimidex pills taken daily. Ten months after my last chemo, my thyroid enlarged requiring more surgery where it was discovered I had Hashimoto’s Disease. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease that is often missed because the first thyroid test shows the thyroid is working fine and most doctors never order the 3 other tests that could show signs of Hashimoto’s and show that the thyroid isn’t working at all. Hashimoto’s begins at puberty for most people and as I learned more about this disease, I realized I had been misdiagnosed since the age of 13. Each misdiagnosis and subsequent treatment would yield short term relief from persistent pain, fatigue, and other symptoms but only for a limited amount of time until these symptoms came back stronger. I had my gall bladder removed, then 18 months later I had a complete hysterectomy because of fibroids. While I was in the hospital my doctor walked in and handed me hormones with instructions to begin taking these daily. I did ask him if they were safe and he reassured me they were safe and a low dose. No need to worry and I didn’t until I was informed of having breast cancer 18 months later.
Since the age of 42 years old, I have been hormone free. I have to be because of the HR positive cancer (hormone receptive; which means my body will grow cancer from hormones). But being hormone free can be tough for a girl. As I’ve gotten older, I became grouchier and I often referred to “my bs meter being full.” I found myself avoiding crowds and avoided being around people overall unless I absolutely had to. I was becoming that cranky old lady and I did not want to be that cranky old lady. So, my friend introduced me to CBD oil and as I began to use this supplement daily my mood was lifted, I became happier.
I began researching CBD oil and industrial hemp and was amazed at how many things this plant could be used for. CBD oil has so many uses for so many various illnesses that it sounds too good to be true. Here are some of the things I have discovered about CBD oil: high in antioxidant properties, prevents oxidation in the body, works great for age-related inflammation, limits neurological damage from stroke or head injury, and effective in treating auto immune diseases including Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, and HIV dementia. And there are ongoing studies and new information coming out about this supplement almost daily.
As I dove deeper into the world of hemp I also became confused because most media lumps industrial hemp and CBD oil in with marijuana. And in my state, marijuana is still illegal and on a federal level marijuana is illegal. Industrial hemp is part of the cannabis family and marijuana is part of the cannabis family as well. But that is where the similarities end. Marijuana has 2 uses: recreational and medicinal, that is it. Industrial hemp has over 25,000 known uses and that list continues to grow. And CBD oil is extracted from the cones of the flowers grown from industrial hemp. And unlike marijuana, industrial hemp is legal on a federal level.
Industrial hemp (aka hemp) has low levels of THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) being 0.3% or less. Marijuana has 5.0-35% THC levels. If a plant produces high levels of CBD oil, it will naturally produce low levels of THC. If a plant produces high levels of THC, it will naturally produce low levels of CBD oil. If hemp cross pollenates with marijuana, it will lower the levels of THC in the marijuana crop and ruin it. Wow! What a powerhouse hemp is!
As I began to understand CBD oil and hemp oil I couldn’t find a reliable source of hemp and CBD oil. I could find olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, and glycerin, lots of glycerin. I could find hemp oil but not hemp and CBD oil combined. I wanted the carrier oil to be hemp oil because it’s a natural blood thinner, reduces bad cholesterol, increasing good cholesterol, and reduces blood pressure. And as I intensified my search, I was confused by all the different labels. Full spectrum, broad spectrum, THC free, mg per bottle, milliliters per dose…it’s crazy! So being the problem solver I am, I decided if I could find CBD oil grown in Kentucky (I believe there is magic in that soil) and find a reputable manufacturer I would start my own product line. I wanted to be able to look at a bottle and easily read the label. I wanted to be able to read and understand the ingredients. I wanted the farmers to use sustainable farming practices and not use herbicides or pesticides. I wanted to offer full spectrum CBD oil (high in terpenes and flavonoids) grown in Kentucky, with the carrier oil being hemp grown in North America. No imported, cheap oils.
And after digging deep into my search, I found everything I was looking for. My product line was born. And I named it “The Good Life” because the people in my life that were testing our product were talking about how their life improved. None of them were marathon runners necessarily, they were returning to every day activities they had stopped because of their physical limitations. I had one friend whose face lit up as she told me she spent the day shopping and never had pain. My friend, Keith, beamed as he told me he went fishing for the first time “in decades.” And another that no longer suffered from restless leg syndrome. The Good Life was about to be born…until it was discovered another company had that name.
I had the product but no name. As my team and I spent the day brainstorming away I wrote ‘miracle’ down but did not want to have that as the name. But as I Googled miracle the Latin root mir appeared on my screen. Mir means: amazing, surprising, unique, wonderful, extraordinary. Each of those words have been used to describe the benefits of our CBD products. I was hooked but my team, not so much. Mir also is connected to the space program from the 1970-80s. But when I talked to my nephew, told him the name and what it meant he said, “Cool! I’d get a tattoo of that.” That was the deciding factor…someone wanted a tattoo of this cool name. Mir products were created.
As a consumer I was looking for a product that clearly states the strength of CBD oil in the bottle. The label on Mir’s CBD products make it easy to understand what ingredients are in it. And only 3 ingredients are used in all tinctures. We have done all of this. The Mir CBD products are used by me, my family, friends, and pets daily. It is important for the quality to be in every product. I also wanted to go to a website that is easy to navigate, understand what I’m looking at, and even easier to order products from. We have done this as well.
I wish I had found the benefits of this oil decades ago. The autoimmune diseases it helps with are mind boggling. I just wish this had been available 30 years ago, I could have avoided so much pain. But it is available now and I am so glad I have been able to incorporate this into my wellness journey. At Mir, we are so honored to be a part of your wellness journey.
